10 SkinCare Resolutions for The New Year

A New Year is the perfect opportunity for new beginnings. Whether that means weight loss, checking something off of your bucket list, saving money, or reevaluating some of the old habits that are in need of change. If skin care is on your resolutions list, here are some helpful tips and tricks to get your New Year started off right.

1.    Wear Sunscreen Everyday

And I mean every single day, no matter the time of year or the weather. Sun exposure is one of the leading causes of aging in our skin. Sun damage can cause fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration, dehydrated or flaking skin, excess dryness, and skin cancer. The best thing you can do for your skin this new year is protect it from sun.

2.    Hydrate

Drinking more water and staying away from sugary drinks like soda, juice, or energy drinks should be on everyone’s resolution list this New Year. Have you ever seen a raisin? It’s a grape with all of the moisture removed from it. To keep our skin from looking like a dried-up fruit, it needs lots of delicious water.

3.    A Balanced Diet

A healthy and balanced diet can ensure that your skin is getting exactly what it needs. Find foods that are rich in vitamins A, C, E, Omegas, Antioxidants, and Protein. A well-balanced diet has added perks like weight control, energy, and bone and muscle support so that you can face the challenge of the new year with confidence.

4.    Invest in Skincare and Makeup

While it’s tempting to reach for drugstore brand makeup and skincare because of the appealing price, be sure to check the ingredients list before adding to your basket. Some cosmetic brands can make their products inexpensive because their ingredients are cheap and terrible for your skin. It might mean investing more money into your skincare, but the results will be well worth it.

5.    Visit A Dermatologist

If you’re concerned with stubborn acne, acne scarring, clogged and enlarged pores, or a lackluster complexion, visiting a dermatologist a few times this new year can significantly help your skin issues. A licensed dermatologist will be able to examine your skin, customize a facial treatment specifically for you, and help you on your journey to recovery and maintain your skin goals once they’re achieved.

6.    Always Remove Your Makeup

We’ve all been tempted to crawl into bed with a face full of makeup after a fun night out. Sleeping with makeup blocks our skin’s sensitive pores, which can lead to troublesome blackheads and acne. Makeup also restricts the skin from recovering, which can lead to premature aging.

7.    Sleep Well

As previously mentioned, our skin recovers while we sleep. To give it the optimal time to produce new cells and repair any external damage, we need to be giving our skin a full 6 to 8 hours of sleep a night.

8.    Clean All Utensils

When was the last time that you cleaned your makeup brushes? If you can’t remember, then it’s time. Makeup brushes can trap harmful bacteria inside of the bristles. Take a few minutes during the weekend to give those trusty brushes a deep clean. Repeat every two weeks, and be sure to replace any brushes or sponges with excess makeup that cannot be removed.

9.    Wash Your Pillowcase Weekly

Similar to our makeup brushes, our pillowcases can also harbor harmful bacteria like dirt, oil from our hair, and other pore-cloggers. Be sure to clean your pillows and your cases once a week to maintain a clean place to rest your head.

10.  Consider Cosmetic Treatments

When all else fails or your goals exceed at home treatments, cosmetic treatments are a great alternative. Dr. Malena M.
