Congenital ptosis is a condition whereby the eyelid lifting (levator) muscle is not developed properly resulting in a droopy eyelid at birth. This can be a sight threatening disorder if not addressed appropriately. If a child is born with severe ptosis, the eyelid will not allow important visual stimulus from the eye to the brain, which is important in visual development.
Children with mild to moderate ptosis may develop sight properly, but may become self-conscious of their condition by school age. With coordinated care with the Pediatrician, Pediatric ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Surgeon, appropriate timing of ptosis repair can be determined and sight can develop normally.
