Neck Lift with Dr. Marie Somogyi
Austin, TX

Due to gravity, constant muscle movement, genetics and sun damage, your neck may begin showing unmistakable signs of aging that are difficult to hide or disguise.

A surgical neck lift can help address the telltale signs of aging with sagging skin, fat accumulation, and skin textural changes. This innovative procedure can rejuvenate the neck by removing stubborn fat deposits from beneath the chin and around your neck, tightening neck muscles, and removing excess skin to produce a sharper, slimmer, and more aesthetically pleasing angle between the neck and jawline.

What Can a Neck Lift Accomplish?

A youthful and slender neck includes tight and firm skin without a prominent double chin or muscle banding. As time progresses, the neck is one of the first areas to develop deeply etched horizontal wrinkles, significant skin laxity, and fat deposits. The tissues within the neck also become weaker as we age, resulting in the appearance of vertical muscle bands.

Due to your lifestyle factors and daily practices, your neck may age faster than your face. For example, people who spend a significant amount of time outside tend to overlook their necks when applying sun protection, allowing the sun’s rays to damage their skin. In addition, routine activities like staring down at electronic devices for hours and neglecting to exfoliate and moisturize your neck area can also contribute to advanced aging. Surgical intervention is the definitive, gold standard treatment for addressing some of these changes.

A cosmetic neck lift helps to restore the youthful appearance to the neck.  You will notice a difference in the appearance of your neck shortly after your procedure, and the benefits will only progress as you continue to age. Specifically, your surgeon will focus on removing excess fat from your chin and neck area, tightening neck muscles, removing loose and hanging skin, improving the contours of your jawline, and smoothing out neck banding.

What Happens During a Neck Lift?

A neck lift is commonly performed in conjunction with a lower facelift and/or other procedures, such as upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty. For your comfort, your neck lift will take place while you are comfortable under general anesthesia. For most patients, a neck lift is part of a facelift procedure, which involves simultaneously lifting the midface and the neck area; however, it can also be a stand-alone surgery, depending on your desired results.

Through hidden incisions around your ears, your surgeon will reposition tissues from the sides, elevating your skin and moving the underlying muscles and fascia layers into a more youthful position. If you have undesired fat under your chin, you can choose to add liposuction to your customized surgical plan to redefine your jawline and eliminate the appearance of a double chin.

What to Expect After Neck Lift Surgery

A neck lift is an outpatient procedure, so you can return home the same day as your surgery. The recovery includes swelling and bruising immediately after your operation. In addition, we’ll fit you with a support garment to protect your incisions and help hold the skin in position during healing.

You’ll receive important incision care and at-home recovery instructions, which may include:

  • Avoiding alcohol, aspirin, and prescription blood thinners, which can contribute to bleeding and excessive bruising
  • Keeping your head elevated
  • Not applying ice to your neck area
  • No lifting of heavy objects or sharply turning your head

Neck lift recovery is different for everyone, so your recovery time largely depends on the extent of your surgery. Generally, neck lift recovery takes about three months to heal fully. However, after about three weeks, many patients feel well enough to return to work and normal activities.

What Is the Difference Between a Facelift and a Neck Lift?

Facelift and necklift are commonly performed together to provide the most natural appearing results.  As gravity, volume loss, and skin textural changes affect both the face and neck, performing a facelift and a necklift simultaneously addresses the transition between these two areas.  A facelift lifts and repositions the soft tissue and muscular layers of the face, providing a dramatic effect that remains the gold standard in anti-aging techniques. Facelift surgery can also target the following facial imperfections:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Jowls
  • Facial volume loss

The same collagen breakdown and muscle laxity that cause facial aging can also occur in the neck. Sagging skin and fat deposits may develop below the chin as well as laxity within the platysma (neck) muscles.  When performing neck lift surgery, Dr. Somogyi can:

  • Remove excess skin and fat from your jowls or under your jaw
  • Tighten your neck muscles to reduce sagging below the chin
  • Correct a turkey wattle and a double chin from excess fat and skin accumulation
  • Produce a smoother, younger neckline
