Liquid Facelift – Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvenation in Austin
The goal of any facial rejuvenation procedure is to create a refreshed appearance and natural results with minimal discomfort. The liquid facelift accomplishes this objective by combining multiple injectable treatments into a single process. This procedure, which requires minimal downtime, lifts the patient’s facial features, smooths wrinkles, and restores lost volume. At Eyelid & Facial Plastic Surgery Associates, Dr. Malena Amato, brings her expertise from Stanford and Georgetown Universities to offer injectable treatments that restore firmer, fuller contours to the forehead, mid-face, and lower face.

What’s Included in a Liquid Facelift?
The procedures included in a liquid facelift vary, though they almost always include Botox and dermal fillers. Dr. Amato has developed an extensive liquid facelift system that incorporates several treatments not typically offered as part of this procedure. This allows her to correct multiple signs of aging for a completely revitalized look. Injectable treatments can often be combined with other cosmetic procedures for an optimal result. Depending on the patient’s individual needs, liquid facelifts may include some or all the following treatments:
Dermal fillers are used to add volume to areas that have become sunken due to age-related facial fat loss. These compounds can fill in deep wrinkles and hollows under the cheeks and around the eyes. They’re also ideal for sculpting purposes; fillers are often used to shape fuller lips, correct nasal imperfections, and enhance the cheeks and chin.
These compounds, which are medically known as neuromodulators, are the most popular way to treat frown lines, crow’s feet, and other dynamic wrinkles. Neuromodulators work by temporarily relaxing specific small muscle groups that cause creases to appear when the patient smiles, laughs, or frowns. Treatment is a simple office procedure and can be given on the day of consultation. The procedure includes a few injections in the treatment area with a tiny needle, creating relatively no downtime. Results are seen within one to two weeks and can last three to four months. Though complications are rare, risks include bruising, drooping of an eyelid or double vision, or slight headache which are not permanent. Dr. Amato’s training as an oculoplastic facial surgeon and her extensive knowledge of facial anatomy and technique allow her to carefully smooth out thin, fine lines around the eyes, forehead, and mouth while retaining natural facial mobility
Skin isn’t the only thing that sags with age; the pads of fat that support the face also succumb to the effects of gravity. Sometimes, these facial fat pads clump together and collect underneath the jawline, creating fat below the chin, or sub-mental fat. Sometimes, this fat pad is hereditary and not related to age. In either case, Kybella® can be applied to slim and sculpt the chin and jawline. Kybella® injections use a safe, natural acidic compound to dissolve the lipids inside fat cells. Kybella® is currently the only FDA-approved non-surgical sub-mental fat reduction procedure.
Loss of facial volume from aging or weight loss can result in a tired or drawn appearance, creating hollows around the temples and eyes, the descent of eyebrows and cheeks, skin sagging of the jowls, and deepening of nasolabial folds around the mouth. Facial fat transfer uses fat taken from the patient’s own body to restore lost facial volume. While a fat transfer is typically performed at an outpatient surgical setting, it is minimally invasive and doesn’t require significant incisions. Some patients prefer facial fat transfer over dermal fillers, as the results of this procedure are permanent, whereas dermal fillers need to be maintained with a session once every six to twelve months. Downtime typically includes some bruising and swelling. Since some of the fat deposited will resorb, optimal facial fat transfer results can be achieved for most patients in two treatments, typically spaced six to 12 months apart.
Dr. Amato uses various techniques for skin resurfacing, including a TCA (trichloroacetic) peel or fractionated CO2 laser. Both techniques minimize signs of UV damage, such as sunspots and areas of rough, leathery skin, which results in a smooth, refreshed appearance and even skin tone. Laser skin resurfacing can also treat melasma, acne scarring, wrinkles, and a range of other common skin conditions. Dr. Amato’s Acupulse fractionated CO2 laser can be applied in an office procedure or in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures in an outpatient surgery suite. Fractionated CO2 laser resurfacing works on different layers of the skin, inducing collagen, balancing pigment, and tightening skin. Because of the fractionated laser’s multilayer ablative and non-ablative technology, healing time and risks are markedly reduced, compared to traditional CO2 laser techniques. Both procedures require avoidance of sun both before and after the procedure. Skin care, injectables, and cosmetic surgery can be utilized in conjunction with these techniques to enhance and prolong the effects of skin rejuvenation.
How is TCA Peel performed?
Topical anesthesia is applied before the treatment. The TCA procedure is performed in minutes as Dr. Amato applies Trichloroacetic Acid evenly on the skin with care to avoid the eyes. There is a light burning and frosting of the skin, leaving the skin pink and gradually tightens before peeling. Dr. Amato uses a medical grade 25-30% TCA not normally used in aesthetic spas to achieve optimal results with one treatment. Peeling usually begins 3-5 days after treatment and can last up to a week. Results reveal smooth, revitalized skin.
How Is Fractionated Co2 Laser Resurfacing Performed?
Laser skin resurfacing is very well tolerated, and topical anesthesia is applied before the procedure. Immediate post-procedure redness and swelling with little discomfort can be expected for the first three to four days. Cool packs and healing gel, such as Aquaphor, are recommended the first few days following laser resurfacing. Healing time usually lasts approximately a week when the dead skin falls off revealing fresh, new skin. There is a slight pinkness to the skin for a few weeks after the procedure. Facial resurfacing can be performed in conjunction with dermal fillers or other cosmetic procedures.
During your consultation, Dr. Amato will examine your facial structure and ask you about your recovery and maintenance preferences. Then, she’ll personalize your liquid facelift to reflect your unique goals and anatomy.
What Are My Skin Care Options?
Dr. Amato believes that excellent skin care compliments any surgical procedure prevents changes from aging and sun exposure and preserves longevity of a more youthful appearance. An excellent sunblock and moisturizer is the foundation of skin care, but other anti-aging products such as anti-antioxidants and retinol can further enhance your appearance. Dr. Amato offers skin care products from SkinCeuticals and Elta MD, and also works closely with local dermatologists and med spas for a range of products and services.
Who Makes a Good Candidate for the Liquid Facelift?
The liquid facelift is ideally suited to treating the early signs of facial aging. Patients who don’t yet require a surgical facelift (those between 35 to 50 years of age) are generally perfect candidates for this procedure, as it produces very natural results. The liquid facelift may also help to delay the need for facelift surgery by stimulating collagen production and reducing stress on the skin.
To enjoy the best possible results with a liquid facelift, you will need to be in good overall health and not currently pregnant or breastfeeding. You’ll also need realistic expectations for this procedure. The liquid facelift can’t wholly replace facelift surgery, especially for mature patients who have loose skin. However, Dr. Amato can combine your liquid facelift with minimally invasive endoscopic procedures (like brow lift surgery) to create more dramatic results without significant discomfort or downtime.
