Meet Dr. Somogyi

Dr. Marie Somogyi, MD, FACS

Dr. Marie Somogyi’s dream to pursue medicine began at a very young age.  Her scientific interest coupled with her naturally artistic eye steered her to the field of oculofacial plastic surgery, which perfectly matched these interests. She is committed to providing individualized, patient centered care while utilizing advanced surgical techniques in order to deliver the highest level of care for her patients.

After completing a competitive two year fellowship in ophthalmic plastic, orbit, and reconstructive surgery accredited by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) and a facial cosmetic surgery accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS), Dr. Somogyi became double board certified as an ophthalmic and facial plastic surgeon.  She also serves as a faculty member for the Ophthalmology Department at the Dell Medical School at UT Austin.   She is actively involved in research, which has been frequently presented at national meetings.  Furthermore, she has been recognized by her patients and peers as a Texas Rising Star and a Top Doctor multiple years running.

I strive to treat my patients as members of my own family. I have grown both my practice and family here in central Texas, and my husband and I recently welcomed our second son. Becoming a mom has made me an even more compassionate and empathetic physician for my patients and my patients feel that personal connection. I look forward to welcoming you as a patient, and ultimately, invite you into my extended family.

Background & Experience

Dr. Somogyi was born in Manchester, England, and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan at a young age.  Her attention to detail was evident early on when she won a national handwriting competition.  She attended the University of Notre Dame as a scholar athlete on the varsity rowing team and graduated with a major in Pre-Professional Studies and Psychology. In addition to her academic and athletic pursuits, Dr. Somogyi honed her creative aptitude in the art department.   She attended the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago, where she graduated with Honors in Research.  During her time at Loyola, she received many accolades, including the Stamm Scholarship for her dedication and service to the Department of Ophthalmology along with competitive research grants from the Richard A. Perritt Foundation and the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness.  She was also fortunate to have met her husband, Jason, in medical school.  She completed her internship at Presence Resurrection Hospital in Chicago and residency at Loyola University Medical Center, where she was elected chief resident.  During residency, Dr. Somogyi served as an ophthalmology advocacy ambassador for the State of Illinois to Congress in Washington, D.C.  Dr. Somogyi was then chosen from many highly competitive applicants to pursue her passion in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery as an American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) accredited fellow at TOC Eye and Face, where she performed thousands of surgical procedures.  She also completed an American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) accredited fellowship focusing on facial cosmetic surgery.

Achievements

Dr. Somogyi has been very active in advancing the science of ophthalmology and ophthalmic plastic surgery publishing numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.  She has presented her work at many national meetings, including the ASOPRS and AACS annual meetings, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.  Her research has been selected as “Best Presentation” at multiple meetings, and she has also been awarded the prestigious Cosmetic Surgery Foundation Grant Award.

Dr. Somogyi is dedicated to providing exceptional care for her patients, both home in Texas and abroad.  Locally, she has been recognized by her patients and peers as a Texas Rising Star and a Top Doctor multiple years running. She also recently traveled with the “About Face” foundation to Vietnam, where she performed nearly 70 procedures in a week, focusing on congenital facial defects and hopes to return again soon.

What patients Are saying about Dr. Somogyi

I went to 3 different doctors before finding Dr. Somogyi. It is refreshing to find a surgeon with such passion for helping her patients. She was the first surgeon that could perform the procedure I needed out of 3 referrals. The staff was wonderful in every way. Thank you for providing excellent service and care in a difficult time with my eye.
